    The OVQG's Bee groups are for members who enjoy handwork in any form, be it: appliqué, English paper piecing, embellishing, quilting, embroidery — or even the mundane task of quilt binding! Group members generously share techniques, encouragement, and creative inspiration. A favourite part of the time together involves show and tell.

    The Zoom Bee Group meets from 10 AM to 12 noon on Thursdays. (Click here for the Zoom meeting link.)

    There is no cost to participate. Registration for this group is optional, but it will enable you to receive a reminder email containing the meeting link the day before each meeting.

  • Library Bee Group

    The OVQG's Bee groups are for members who enjoy handwork in any form, be it: appliqué, English paper piecing, embellishing, quilting, embroidery — or even the mundane task of quilt binding! Group members generously share techniques, encouragement, and creative inspiration. A favourite part of the time together involves show and tell.

    The Library Bee Group meets from 10 AM to 2 PM in the meeting room of the Emerald Plaza Public Library, located at 1547 Merivale Avenue in Ottawa. Sessions are normally held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. 

    Every 6 months each group member must pay their portion of the facility rental cost, which is usually around $30-35.

    Due to space limitations, membership in this group is limited to 12. Currently the group is at capacity, but if you are interested in joining you can ask Carol to add you to the wait list.

    Gather up your sewing supplies and a favorite project and come sew with us. It's always more fun with kindred spirits!

    NEW THIS FALL: We have both Friday and Saturday to sew ... a mini-retreat! You'll be able to leave your machine/supplies set up.  Hoping we can get some quilts finished for the big show in the Spring:)

    Friday: 3:30 pm - 11:00 pm

    Saturday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

    The kitchen is available for making tea or coffee and reheating in the microwave.  We can put our lunches in the fridge. 

    Spaces: min 6/ max 26

    AnnMarie Rowland (www.annmarierowland.com) comes to us from Owen Sound, Ontario and will present her Pieces of Time Musical Trunk Show. She will be bringing a large selection of quilts to share with our guild and will also perform some folk songs she wrote as she tells the story of her mother and her beautiful, treasured one-of-a-kind quilts (all hand pieced and hand quilted from the WWI era). The program is interactive with fun opportunities to sing along!

  • Community Projects Sew Day

    Community projects sew days are normally held on the Tuesday after each monthly Guild meeting, as well as the last Tuesday of the month. (Note: there are occasional exceptions to these dates.)

    We meet in the nursery at Riverside United Church. (The same location as Guild meetings.)

    You can work on any quilts that you plan on donating to good causes. Bring you sewing machine, basic tools, something to work on, and you ideas and expertise to share.

    Meetings are free and open to everyone. Registration for this group is optional, but it will enable you to receive a reminder email the day before each meeting.

    Billie Stephens will lead you through the fundamentals of paper piecing to create the stunning Mariners Compass! 

    Participant Skill Level:  Confident Beginner

    There will be a $10 fee collected at the time of the class to cover a supply kit.

    Everyone will have a separate 6' table.

    The "All About M. E." quilting group allows machine embroidery enthusiasts to learn, share their experiences, and show off their projects.

    Zoom sew days allow quilters to work at home on their own projects in the company of others. Have fun making progress on a new project — or a UFO you've been putting off — while getting praise and suggestions from the rest of the group!

    These events are open to OVQG members only, and are held on Zoom from 9 AM to 3 PM (Eastern Time) on the 4th Saturday of each month (note: 3rd Saturday in December). There is no cost to participate, and you can join and leave an event at any time if you can't be there for the entire day.

    Registration for the Zoom sew days series is optional, but it will enable you to receive a reminder email containing the event's Zoom link the day before each meeting.

  • Fall Retreat 2026 - Three day In-Town Retreat Maki House

    Our In-Town Retreat is a great opportunity to get together and sew!  Bring an unfinished project that you're working on or start something new and share your ideas and inspiration with others! You can set up your sewing equipment, leave at the end of each day and return to finish your project the following day. It is a retreat but you get to sleep in your own bed at night.  Your projects will be safely undisturbed until you return the next day.

    19 Leeming Dr, Nepean, ON K2H 5P6

    Location has level entry, single story, free parking, kitchen for use.  We will again be able to leave our tables set up for the weekend.

    Our irons, ironing boards, cutting mats, power cords & surge suppressors will be there.

    Bring your own meals.  The fridge and kettle will be available to use.  We will provide coffee, tea and snacks.

    Cost:  $45 for the weekend, or $15 for Saturday Only or Sunday Only

  • Monika Henry - A Planner's Adventures in Improv

    Monika Henry of Penny Spool Quilts (www.pennyspoolquilts.com) comes to us from neighbouring Carleton Place, Ontario and will be presenting A Planner’s Adventures in Improv. Monika will take us on her journey to improvised quilting as someone who once insisted that improv gave her hives. She will detail how she developed a simple, structured approach to “planned improv” quilting to overcome that feeling of being overwhelmed. Sharing a number of quilts, she will also show us how leftovers from past projects may become intentional and playful improvised mini quilts.

    Bonnie Hunter's Mystery Quilt 2025

    Another year, another Mystery pattern from Bonnie Hunter!

    Check Bonnie's website (Quiltville's Quips & Snips) for fabric requirements on Halloween. Then, following the American Thanksgiving, she will post clues/instructions for cutting & sewing.

    We meet at Maki House to explore the Mystery on Friday evenings, beginning November 27th and continue meeting & sewing together thru December and January. 

    Dates for January will be posted late Fall.

Billie is an accomplished sewing instructor, quilter and has an embroidery group where she shares techniques with OVQG members. Billie has great experience teaching sewists of all skill levels quilting, embroidery and other sewing related crafts.   • Cheryl Arkison - How to Become a 5 Star Quilter

    We are pleased to welcome Cheryl Arkison (www.cherylarkison.com) from Calgary, Alberta. Cheryl started quilting at the age of 23 and went on to become a well known and respected teacher, writer, and designer of quilts enjoying spreading the gospel of improv. She has published three books, is raising 3 children, is running a business and has still managed to travel to many exciting places to teach and has been a judge at the Modern Quilt Guild’s Show: Quilt Con. She is a very busy lady and we are fortunate to have her here on Zoom to share How to Become a 5 Star Quilter.

  • Émilie Trahan - Quilt as You Grow

    This month we welcome Émilie Trahan (emilietrahan.com) from Joliette, Quebec. By day, Émilie is a palliative care physician and in her spare time she is a self-taught quilter who started quilting in 2013. Grounded in the roots of the origins of quilting and because of environmental concerns, her quilts are all made of upcycled fabrics such as bed sheets, shirts, scraps, tablecloths, etc., as well as upcycled batting such as flannel sheets, and blankets, essentially making new with the old. She combines the language and poetry of colours to create her unique pieces. Émilie will present to us her lecture Quilt as You Grow.

  • Kim Jamieson-Hirst - How to Wrangle Scraps

    This month we welcome the owner of Chatterbox Quilts (www.chatterboxquilts.com) who will present her lecture on How to Wrangle Scraps. Kim lives in Calgary, Alberta and has been featured in international quilting publication, been a guest speaker on several quilting podcasts and is also a YouTube influencer creating quilting and sewing videos on her Chatterbox Quilts’ channel. Kim has also been a Janome Canada Artisan since 2016 and enjoys creating quilting and embroidery projects to spread the Janome love. She believes that quilting is more than stitching an accurate ¼” seam, that chocolate is an essential quilting tool, and that “practice makes improvement” and you are improving with every quilt you make.

    This month we are happy to welcome Tamara Kate (www.tamarakatedesign.com). Tamara spent her youth growing up in the Caribbean and later returned to Canada where she lives in Montreal, Quebec. She will delight us with her lecture, A Peek into the World of Fabric Design. Tamara will talk of her creative journey within the worlds of fabric design and quilt making and share information on her 9 years (and counting) in the industry: how she got the gig, the process from idea to printed fabric, how she designs, her sources of inspiration, and many other tidbits she’s gathered during the makings of her 15+ collections. All this while showing samples from the processes and of course, lots and lots of quilts.
